Roundism - 07-04-18

Roundism - 07-04-18 When I saw this body position I immediately was charmed by the slanted position creating a dynamic impression, even enforced by the round curves in the calf, triceps, breast and back. Sometimes one has to look very hard and discover the beauty consealed but with this one it was dead easy. It almost drew itself in one go. I sold it straight away. Mill 'De Vlieger' - 09-06-14

Afbeelding
Mill 'De Vlieger' - 09-06-14  There is this little corner of unspoiled beauty in the midst of Leidschendam-Voorburg , where an old mill is situated with some carefully groomed countryside surrounding it. It is De Vliegermolen (Mill 'De Vlieger'). I once in a while go there by bike on my way to Brugman Art where I teach.  Back in 2014 I decided to do a pastel of this mill after Mondriaan's  Mill at Sunlight . I did not go easy on the orange/blue complementary contrast scheme so it turned out to become a quite hefty pastel. Luckily for me I sold it at August 11th 2020 to a German collector through Singulart.com If you like to read further, please visit this link to my website . Nude - 19-07-15 - 2

Nude - 19-07-15 - 2    Bodyscapes can be fun, especially when the recognition comes in the second instance. In this one I blocked in the scarce lit parts by dark plains surrounding them. The goal was to have the spectator enjoy the abstract quality of tonal rhythym and the overall composition rather than looking at a partially nude woman. This style evolved into my personal roundism style later on. Sometimes I draw them completely straight and now I look at it again, that's fun too. Roundism - 10-08-20

Roundism - 10-08-20 My model visits me every month and I either have her pose on my couch or my bed. The latter is the case here and perhaps you recognize the lighting and the bed from the Venus of The Hague severies I made some time ago. The trianguar position of her body inspired be to think in diagonals and triangles. I drew a couple of slanted diagonal structures from the shin up to the thigh, blocking in the light from the light. The feet I kept relativey small in spite of the actual size in front of my eyes. Forshortening can cause strange effects and I wanted to avoid any strange implausible deformations. The drawing is a fine example of what blocking in the light might bring. You can read further on this post on my website . If you like it, you can download it for € 3.99 on my website .

Roundism - 07-08-20

Roundism - 07-08-20 There are so many subjects to draw: dogs, cats, pets in general, still lifes, people, landscapes and. It was bestowed upon me the task to draw nudes. Somebody's got to do it. I don't mind. Since I am a bachelor I have all the time for the ladies and nudes in particular. In this one I concentrated on the slanted position of the legs that were that beautiful, it did not need too much cubist styling from my part. In stead, I added massive blocks of black and white, covering the total tonal bandwith. I kept the left lower corner and the upper right one blank so I created a counterbalance to the position of the legs. If you want to read further you can go to my post on my website here . Voorlinden - 03-05-20

Voorlinden - 03-05-20 Sometimes you come across a landscape, in fact an estate in this particular case, you want to know about a lot more. Estate 'Voorlinden' at Wassenaar, Netherlands , just above The Hague, is such a fine example. I drew it back in 2013 where I saw it at a distance and enchanted by this big mansion that looked like as if inspector Morse is just about to solve a murder case in the library. Later I found out that the mansion in fact was modelled after an English country house and that was when I visited it for the first time. It appeared it was opened for public: both the mansion where a lovely restaurant is at, the surrounding area and of course the present Museum Voorlinden , one of my favorite as to contemporary art in the Haaglanden area. If you are in the neighborhood, I strongly advise to visit the estate. I once in a while dwell through the woods at the estate that show a bit of elevation towards the dunes, reminding me to my birthground in Nijmegen...

Pastel Study 03 (2013) (sold)

Afbeelding
Pastel study 03 (2013) (sold) This pastel I made on a whim whilst working at Brugman Art at Voorburg, Netherlands, waiting for my students in the evening. I wanted to try something new and had some expressionistic outcome in mind. I often look for color composition, either in pastel or in oil, by picking out some pastel sticks I like and see what I can do with them. This time I think I hit the hammer on the nail directly. The color scheme is fantastic and I sold the pastel directly to a Canadion collector through Saatchiart.com . If you want to see it on my website, please follow this link . If you like to download a printable (hi-res downloadable file) for only € 3.99, please click here . You can print it / have it print out at your local printshop. It will look great when framed.
